Lesson 17

Here is my lesson 17 assignment that never got published on my blog

This brochure is a trifold 3-color brochure that was used as a mail-out informational brochure. This is a pretty basic brochure with just 3 colors black, white, and blue. There is more type than graphics on the brochure because it is more of an informational brochure then it is a promotional brochure. It was an invitation to a seminar and therefore included information on what would be included in the seminar. It could be improved by maybe adding a few graphics to make the seminar seem more appealing rather than a boring seminar.  Overall the design looks nice just could use some more excitement so people wouldn’t automatically think that it was junk mail.

Lesson 16 Ad Reflection

Ad for Stockholms Hundforum (Daytime dog care)

This is a humorous advertisement for a daytime dog care company. Its tagline is "What's your dog up to when it's home alone?" The ad portrays a dog doing a "bad" thing and makes dog owners think what bad thing could my dog be doing while I am gone, could my dog be messing up the furniture, attacking the fridge, or many other "bad" things. The ad personifies the dog in a funny way. The eyes are automatically directed to the dog in the middle of the ad and what he is looking at on the computer. It is effective in making dog owners think about leaving their dog home alone because of the bad things it could be doing. I would make the logo and tagline a little larger in this ad. Overall the design is very effective and funny. The ad would make me stop and look if I was flipping though a magazine because it is so unique. This would be an image/lifestyle advertisement, it is directed towards people that own dogs.

Integrating Photoshop and Illustrator

1. Smart Objects
Placing a photoshop file as a smart object in illustrator makes it so that when you make changes to the photoshop file on photoshop they will be applied to the photoshop file that you have placed on illustrator. Always place objects as smart objects. It links the files

2. Design at 100%
Always design at a level where your artwork is the largest that you plan on using it, rescaling to a smaller size is always better then making something larger. Build to size.

3. No fill, No Stroke bounding boxes
Building a no fill, no stroke, bounding box first and placing it in photoshop will make placing it as a smart object easier later. Makes placing smart objects much easier.

4. New way to rotate
You can just click and use the rotate tool and rotate artboards on photoshop but not on illustrator

5. Actions
Actions can be used to record everything that you do in photoshop and be used later to add the same changes to a later photo. You do this by clicking new action in the action panel and saving the new action. It will then show up in the button mode in the action panel.

Logo Mania

Text Only Logo

The Coca-Cola is a text only logo. It appears in all aspects of their advertising and marketing. This logo works well for Coke because it has remained the same for years and is easily recognized by many people all over the world. Although the designs around the text may have  been changed over the years, the text has remained the same. The Coca-Cola logo is a text only logo that has lasted throughout the generations. An example of how the text has been used in various ways, look at the logo used for coke products below. This logo is an example of text, symbol and product logo used by coke.

Photo Composition

 Leading Lines

This photo is a good example of photo composition using leading lines. The dominant leading line of the railroad track helps to organize and add structure to the photo.

 Subject and Background

This photo displays not only subject and background but also simplicity. Using the beach as a background helps to keep focus on the subject because the background is not too distracting. Not only does this photo display simplicity but also the rule of thirds. The subject is aligned along the outside "grid line" and at a point of interest. The rule of thirds will be described more in detail with the following picture.

Rule of thirds

This photo shows the rule of thirds. Rule of thirds is the basis for well balanced and interesting shots. If you break this photo into a grid with 3 columns and 3 rows like a tic tac toe board. This grid will give you four important parts of the image that you should place points of interest and gives you four lines that are guides for elements in your photo. In this photo the sun and the rocks are placed on the outside lines of the grid in order to create focal points in the image.

All of the photos posted on my blog are JPEG images and should only be used on the web. The are good for the web because they compress larger files when quality is not an issue. JPEGs store full color information at 24 bits per pixel and grayscale at 8 bits per pixel. JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group and are used for photographs or naturalistic artwork. For more information on file formats look at my website about file formats, it discusses JPEG, GIF, Bitmap, and vector images. Graphics on the web

Examples of Graphic Design Principles

This is a good example of dominance used in graphic design. The words No More War are the dominant feature of the article and attract the readers attention. The sub-dominant feature is the blue writing and the sub ordinate feature is the article itself.

This is a good example of symmetrical balance used in graphic design. Both sides of the movie poster contain the same layout and having two actors in the middle of the poster helps to create a symmetrical layout. The actors also make a horizontal symmetry line.
